Video Interview…

The other day I was interviewed by Mike Rose from Gamasutra. We chatted about a few of the design decisions and details of Banished while Mike played the game. You can watch the full video below.

    December 24, 2013 9:54 am

When will you take my money?
I realize. you have a sense of pride. But you are killing me.

    December 24, 2013 10:00 am

Awesome a video! 😀 Going to watch this asap. Merry Christmas Luke!

    December 24, 2013 10:04 am

Waiting so impatiently….but it will be a fantastic start to 2014. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

    December 24, 2013 11:07 am

If you can trust Steam, it will come 2014.

Take my money! Do it now!!! 😀

    December 24, 2013 12:35 pm

My eyes keep focusing on the gameplay instead of you guys talking…no disrespect intended, but the guilty satisfaction of simply watching the game is too much…

    December 24, 2013 12:41 pm

Hey I’ve been following this game for a while, I’m wondering if you are using flowmaps for your rivers and if so would you be able to make a devlog on how you create them at run time?

    December 24, 2013 1:40 pm

Holy cow I wanna play this game soooooo bad!!!

    December 24, 2013 2:31 pm

    Well done Duke,

wish you all the luck you need to make this game one of those games gamers want to play.

Meryy christmas and a happy ne year from the Annozone (germany) 🙂

    December 24, 2013 2:32 pm

    Can’t wait 😀

    December 24, 2013 3:34 pm

After hearing about the modular approach to the UI I thought I would ask if you had considered or tried to develop having those windows on a second monitor. I play a lot of MMOs and with those modular windows I am always wishing the game would extend a “blank page” as it were that I could just house all those windows on to keep my main screen just the action of the game.

Just a thought, I’m sure it would be a lot of effort to accomplish.

    December 24, 2013 6:09 pm

    Merry Xmas!
Looks like it’s coming along nicely.
Personally, I’d rather play it when it’s ready; I’m testing too many other games at the moment and would like to play something that works 😛

    December 25, 2013 1:47 am

Nice video, but he mess up a little bit at the end said the game comes out in early 2004 instead of 2014. Still can’t wait to play it.

    December 25, 2013 6:31 am

January isn’t that far away, cant wait!!

    December 25, 2013 12:39 pm

Whoaaaaa this fantastic game + soundtrack form Tzar: Burden of The Crown will blow my head !!
    I can not wait!

    December 25, 2013 1:53 pm

    great! can’t wait

    December 25, 2013 5:19 pm

I was wondering — there’s a value for the temperature, but is that Celcius or Fahrenheit? If it’s F, could it be set to C, or does is change it’s color from blue (cold) to hot (red)? 50F would mean very little to me as a non-US player. 🙂

    December 25, 2013 8:01 pm

I found rather weird bug…I keep throwing money at my screen but nothing happens.

    December 25, 2013 10:22 pm

This looks like its going to fill a gaming void I’ve had for a long time. Cant come soon enough!

    December 26, 2013 5:52 pm

@Martijn the temperature is showed in F grade. But he stated that the player can choose C.

    December 27, 2013 4:58 pm

Looks intresting, I saw this game back on reddit way back when simcity came out and I loved the look then. Cant wait

    December 28, 2013 12:20 am

omg i’ll give ya 50$ just gimmei the game now hahahah

    December 28, 2013 5:18 pm

I definitivly hope than you arent tryng to debug Banished alone cause “Late 2013” will turn easily in Late 2016 even if you are an excellent programmer.
    Anyway…Bon courage to u.

    December 28, 2013 5:23 pm

Ho! i have forgoten the most important:
Thanks a lot for this non-destruction based game!

    December 29, 2013 12:28 am

i hope that jun 1st 2014 it will be released as a great happy new years present to us! in return we give you money! lol hope it comes out soon really loveing this game alot!

    December 29, 2013 1:59 am

    All Hail! Baby Jevonte!

    December 30, 2013 3:44 pm

20 bucks?? This game could get 50 and people would buy it. This is exactly the kind of game I’m in to. Settlers 10th anniversary and Simcity, I’m really looking forward for it.

    December 30, 2013 5:17 pm

At last, a developer talks about adding complexity to the game! It sounds great. I will gladly give you money if you launch the game free of any game-breaking bugs. So take your time. And no early access and no pre-order, you already have my respect sir.

    December 30, 2013 5:50 pm

@Erdobelli “a developer”??? THE developer. He is only one. This is a one man studio.

    December 30, 2013 6:16 pm

    More vids pls!

    December 30, 2013 7:24 pm

@Axios thanks for the clarification 🙂 I hope it stays as one-man show, away from the radar of big publishers long enough so that we can enjoy once again a quality and non-streamlined city-building sim.

    December 30, 2013 10:50 pm

I sure am eager, trying not to get impatient, I had wanted to buy this for myself for Christmas, but I guess Merry Jaunuary-mas will be just as good – although can you imagine the size of our settlements by now if we had begun building December 24th at 11:59 P.M? 😀

    December 31, 2013 3:17 am

@Erdobelli Please. 🙂 I hope the same thing.
He tell that worked for 10 years in game industry and now he is a one man studio for develop a game (and many others, as stated on reddit) free to decide all by himself.

    December 31, 2013 9:21 am

found this article while having a browse. Interesting view on early release vs waiting till the game is “complete”. Granted, this team is “kickstarted” but it’s an interesting view on early release problems and perceived letdowns vs the benefits provided by valued feedback.
After reading it i’m still not sure which is best, but it’s thought provoking :).

    December 31, 2013 9:38 am

Damn just saw this video and i swear everytime i see a new video clip this game looks better and better?

I have a bad feeling im going to get hooked on this for a while lol.

    December 31, 2013 5:18 pm

Martijn raises a good point. as a Canadian I prefer to use C when it comes to temperature.

it’s too bad there’s no research tree I was looking forward to upgrading my roads, building bikes, horse carriages, or even cars.

    December 31, 2013 6:16 pm

@Kairon the temperature is showed in F grade. But he stated that the player can choose C.

    January 1, 2014 4:04 am

    January 2, 2014 10:54 am

Really can’t wait for this game, itching to buy and play. As a web developer sometimes it good to take a break and this game is perfect – plus I love building games but have felt let down by recent games.

    Hope it’s released soon.

    Happy new year all.

    January 2, 2014 2:24 pm

Cant wait for this game. I hope its released before I leave in the Peace corp on April 3rd!

    January 3, 2014 11:50 am

School is starting mid-Jan. I really hope I’ll be able to play before it beggins. The game seems really awesome and well done. Congrats.

    January 6, 2014 6:45 am

    January 10, 2014 3:20 am

Hi Duke, next time you do an interview, please make sure that the microphone setup is either better quality or better configurated. As it was, it was at times hard to understand for me as a non-English speaker. The background noise was very disturbing.
